Estimation of TSH- A Trial To Establish Thyroid Dysfunction As A Risk For Fracture is a study done to see the impact of variation of serum TSH levels on the bones. Thyroid dysfunctions are the most common endocrine disorders and fracture is also one of the commonest morbidity observed in clinical practice. Overt hyperthyroidism, Overt hypothyroidism, Subclinical hyperthyroidism and Subclinical hypothyroidism are the four major thyroid dysfunctions. Fracture is the break in continuity of the bone. TSH has a great impact on bone metabolism . It mediates its effect through its receptors located on the osteoblasts and osteoclast . The study included 177 radio-logically confirmed cases of fracture. The level of serum TSH was estimated in all the cases. On the basis of serum TSH levels, the cases were divided in the five categories namely, four of thyroid disorders and Euthyroid. The results were subjected to statistical analysis (One - way ANOVA) done on Microsoft Excel. P value was found to be < 0.05, which is highly significant. Thus concluding that the any variations in level of TSH from its normal range, is a risk for fracture.
