In this book diffusion bonding of a low carbon steel AISI 1018 with AISI 304L stainless steel base metal with AISI 304L steel interlayer, duplex stainless steel SAE 2205 with medium–carbon steel AISI 1035 and a titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V with AISI 304L is discussed elaborately. The formation of compounds Mn3Si, Cr3Ni5, Si2Cr23C6, CrC and Fe3C at the interface and adjacent region strengthened and imparted dispersion strengthening effect to the joint and adjacent to the joint region. The duplex stainless steel SAE 2205 with medium–carbon steel AISI 1035 processed at a temperature of 975 °C, a bonding time of 90 min and a holding pressure of 20 MPa yielded maximum shear strength of 360.9 MPa. The formation of compounds such as ‘σ’, CuFe, FeNi, Fe2Si, Mn3Si, MnV, Fe2VSi, CrC, FeC, FeN, CrN, CrO2 and FeO2 at the joint region is noted. The shear strength was not reduced because of these compounds present at the joint. Further, diffusivity of interstitial elements ‘C’ and ‘N’ was faster and deeper than other elements on either side of the diffusion couple. Characterization of the bonded joints between Ti-6Al-4V and AISI 304L revealed the phase transformation and the formation of ‘’ phase.
