Work stress is common in most professions. However it has crossed its limits in IT sector due to heavy work pressure and time deadlines. This study aimed at assessing the levels of occupational stress among IT employees and coping mechanisms adopted by them; the influence of secondary variables, age, gender,education, designation and marital status on stress and coping; the relationship between stress and coping mechanisms adopted;influence of family environment on stress and coping.600 IT employees answered questionnaires on Occupational Stress Index(Srivastava & Singh, 1984)and Coping Check List(Rao,et.al 1986. The study revealed that occupational stress for the entire sample as moderate; employees were found to use unhealthy coping and high risk coping mechanisms, which are negative approaches to cope with stress. Relationship between stress and coping was found partially;influence of secondary variables was lesser;family environment was the most significant factor contributing to stress. This book is an eye opener for companies, policy makers as well as Governments to address needs of employees in fulfilling their family obligations, thereby reducing stress levels.
