In the era of budget reductions, school districts are often looking for methods to reduce expenditures. An area of the budget that is frequently targeted for reductions is in the area of facility maintenance. Needed repairs, renovations and construction are often areas that are delayed due to the expense. As research has shown us, school facilities in the United States are deteriorating at a rapid pace. A tremendous amount of consternation is occurring in state legislatures and with local citizens to ascertain whether the cost for new facilities actually increases student achievement. This analysis reviews past research regarding this phenomenon and sets out to predict student achievement based upon the condition of the facility.
