This study contributes to the less explored area of son preference and old age security; fulfilment of parental expectations. The study is an attempt to understand the fulfilment of ‘parental expectations of a secured old age’ that acted as a driver for their strong son preference. Study, further, explores quality of life at later ages as function of satisfaction earned from emotional, financial, psychological support from son at later ages. An innovative attempt of developing “role of son index” has been made to quantifying the role of son in fulfilling the parental expectations. Present study has been conducted in Nagpur city of Maharashtra, India which makes a fare representation of growing urban settings in the country.
