The amalgamation problem for semigroups is almost as old as the subject itself. Since the initiation of its systematic study by J.M. Howie in 1962 different aspects of this problem have been investigated continuously—there even appeared a number of research articles concerning semigroup amalgams during the first decade of the current century. The amalgamation of pomonoids (partially ordered semigroups with identity) was first considered in a research article by S.M. Fakhruddin in 1986. The subject then remained dormant for nearly twenty years until revived by the author in his PhD research project. The current book contains an account of the recent study of amalgamation (and related properties) of pomonoids. The last chapter of the book contains results showing that the introduction of order may subject the amalgamation of monoids, as well as its related properties, to severe restrictions. In particular, there are numerous situations where the amalgamation becomes impossible upon the introduction orders. The book will be helpful for anyone planning to pursue further research in this domain.
