There is increasing expectation on universities to do more than just teaching and research. Increasingly, universities are becoming agents in enhancing regional and national development. This has prompted a significant number of studies by regional governments, and universities themselves to assess the contribution of universities to their regions. However, very little of such studies have been conducted in less developed regions in general and Sub-Saharan Africa in particular. This report presents findings of the relationship between an African university in Cameroon and its region. Empirical evidence illustrate that, though unintended, the university has acted as a growth pole in the region. Attracting and supporting business, improving physical and social infrastructure and enhancing socio-economic development.
