The book aimed to study the effect of soil variables and climatic conditions on the composition of and bioactive compounds essential oils from Deverra tortuosa in the coastal desert (West Alexanderia.) and inland desert (Wadi Hagul), Egypt. Thirty seven species were recorded associated with D. tortuosa in both habitats of which 32 were recorded in the coastal desert and fifteen species in inland desert. In the Western Mediterranean Coastal desert, where climate is semi-arid. GC/MS allowed the identification of ninteen compounds in the pet.ether fraction of D. tortuosa, which were characterized by comparing their mass spectra with those of their analogous reported by NIST library. The identified compounds in pet.ether fraction were grouped into mainly three chemical classes, namely terpenes (7.75%), shikimates (20.01%) and acetogenines (3.72%). The antibacterial assay S. pyogenes was found the more susceptible to the employed D. tortuosa fractions and isolated compounds than S. aureus, S. typhimurium and E. coli.
