The present study demonstrates that a diesel engine can be operated with blends of DMC in diesel fuel with minimal engine changes. In this study pure diesel fuel was used as a base fuel for DMC–diesel blends. The blends containing 5, 10, 15, and 20 per cent DMC fuel by volume is used on a test rig developed for the experimentation. All tests were steady state and were set at constant engine speed 1500 RPM. With the addition of oxygen in the fuel, it has been observed that small CO reductions occur over the engine operation and there is drastic reduction in smoke emission, other exhaust gases were also reduced up to some extent. Moreover there is also increase in the brake horse power and brake thermal efficiency of the engine by small percent. So it can be concluded that the addition of DMC by 15% in diesel not only helps to reduce the exhaust emission but also increases the performance of the diesel engine. The conclusions from the research completed thus far lead to recommendations for use of fuel as a blend in order to improve the engine operation.
